Sherburn in Elmets long awaited Old Girls School Community Centre & Tearooms is having a grand opening on Saturday 1st September. The new community centre has two new activity rooms with wooden floor, suitable for various types of activities and clubs, two meeting rooms a fully equipped computer suite, a community cinema and free WI-FI. There is also a new tea room open to view, the centres Little teapot Cafe. Run by a professional caterer, the tearoom will sell locally made baked goods, cakes and desserts. The official tearoom open date will be released shortly.
The opening of the Old Girls School community centre and tea room is made more precious by the resilience and excellence shown by the community spirited residents of Sherburn, who fought to stop the building being demolished. The ‘Friends of the Old Girls School’ volunteers raised almost £500,000 to stop the demolition, and to convince North Yorkshire County Council that the building should be put to a community use.
The opening will be hosted bwetween 10:30am- 3pm, and Alma Hodgson who worked with the campaigners to save the building, will officially open the centre.
