On Thursday 13th July, Sherburn High School celebrated the brilliant sporting achievements of their students with a bumper awards evening. This year the award ceremony took place in the sports hall and welcomed around 200 students and their families. The packed-out event was a celebration of the effort, attitude and excellence demonstrated by Sherburn students, acknowledging the hard work displayed in a range of sports, from Year 7 right up to Year 11. The awards presented on the night included: ‘GCSE PE’; ‘Most Improved’; ‘Individual Performance’; ‘Team of the Year’; ‘All Rounder’; ‘Respect’.
The PE Department recognised the wonderful contributions staff had made to extra-curricular fixtures and the school Leadership Team, who support all PE projects with energy and enthusiasm, placing great value on the impact sport has with students’ physical, mental and social development.
Sherburn High School was delighted that Leeds Rhinos and England Rugby League icon, Jamie Peacock MBE, was able to present the awards and speak about what it takes to be a successful sportsperson; he is a wonderful role-model for the students to aspire to. He told all present to listen to the positive people around them not the negative ones if they want to lead a successful life; a message that resonated with everyone in the room.
In honour of Wayne Isherwood, ex head of PE at Sherburn High who sadly died last summer, two new trophies were named for him and presented to the boy and girl, Eliza Dulson and Ben Powell, winners of the octathlon and decathlon, competitions that Wayne introduced during his time at Sherburn. The winner of the Neal French Sports Personality of the Year Award was Year 11 student, Natalie Stephenson – Quayle. Natalie was a worthy winner for “displaying all of the values we promote in PE: resilience, determination, hard work, positivity, respect, and is a fantastic role model for all PE students. Natalie received a personalised video message of congratulations on her award from world champion cyclist and Olympic gold medal hopeful, Lizzie (Armistead) Deignan.
PE Teacher Neal French commented ‘’The sports presentation evening was a great success. A packed sports hall celebrated the success of our students who were inspired by a speech given by rugby league legend Jamie Peacock MBE.’
