Applications are now open for applicants to apply for the Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA). The successful applicant will be sponsored by the Rotary Club of Osgoldcross & Elmet to attend a weeks course in the Yorkshire Dales, all expenses paid.
What is RYLA?
The Rotary Youth Leadership Award is a biyearly leadership development program which focuses on secondary school students, university students, or young professionals between the ages of 16-18. RYLA will help you discover your potential and develop skills needed to be a leader in your community, career and everyday life.
RYLA events are organised by Rotary and run by professional activity instructors in a specialised environment. RYLA events are typically 3–7 days long and cover a variety of topics including:
• Leadership fundamentals and ethics
• Communication skills
• Problem-solving and conflict management
• Community and global citizenship
The RYLA programme is highly varied and combines organisational, physical and sporting activities, as well as offering opportunities to develop discussion, social and leadership skills.
What do you get out of the programme?
The residential and group-oriented scenario enables young people to debate issues of professional responsibility and human relations, improve leadership and communication skills, learn about businesses and institutions, and meet Rotarians while having a great deal of fun and making friends for life.
For young adults, RYLA provides the opportunity to refine skills and explore pertinent topics with their peers and elders.
What does RYLA offer?
• Gain exposure to issues and exchange ideas with other talented people like you
• Push yourself to your limits and beyond on physical activities
• Learn how to coordinate activities and community service projects in your community
• Discuss creative approaches for resolving family, social, and professional conflicts
• Learn about other Rotary programmes for young people
RYLA will help you to:
•Develop leadership skills
•Increase self-confidence
•Gain exposure to a variety of issues and meet lots of new people
•Improve career skills and knowledge
•Meet community leaders and mentors
The application process

The programme takes place during the school holidays in July/August.
After the end of the course, the selected candidate returns to Monk Fryston in September to give a talk to Rotary about their experiences.
