Thanks to the generosity of the local community, businesses and groups, once again Sherburn in Elmet has pulled together in difficult circumstances to support others less fortunate.
Recently the government announced that free school meals would not be available this half term holiday. They felt there was enough support available to these families and so were not extending the free school meal voucher scheme throughout the school holidays.
Children living in households that have income related benefits may be eligible for the free meals. Currently they are only available during term time, leaving these families to make their own arrangements during the holidays when the children will be at home.
Landlady Carol Coley from The Wheatsheaf Pub has kindly pledged to provide free meals to all children who normally receive these free school meals. This generous offer was instantly supported by others who have come forward offering donations to cover the costs. A £5 donation will cover the cost of two meals.
Elmet Lions have stepped in to make an amazing donation covering 100 of these meals.
The Swan at South Milford also joined in pledging to support their local village with a hot meal for those who normally receive the meal for just £2.50. Residents are encouraged to sponsor these meals to help covering the costs.
The Cross Keys at Hillam are offering free kids meals to those who need them during half-term. Serving the kids meals 12pm – 8.30pm Monday to Saturday and 12pm – 6pm on Sunday.
The Fishbank in Sherburn will be offering a free kids sausage and chips to all the children who need a meal from 27th October – 30th October 11.30am – 2pm.
The White Horse at Church Fenton will also be offering free meals to any child who needs one during the half term. They will be offering this on Wednesday 28th October, Thursday 29th October and Friday 30th October 12.30pm – 2.00pm.
Scarthingwell Golf Club will also be donating food supplies to the campaign.
Head Teacher of Hungate Primary School, Martyn Broom has already passed on his thanks to The Wheatsheaf, Swan Hotel, Elmet Lions and the communities of Sherburn and South Milford for supporting the Hungry at Half term – Don’t be campaign via Councillor David Brook.
