Important information from Transpennine Route Upgrade effecting local residents
Network Rail Reference: TRU – CFM 12m 0696yds – Bridge CFM/5
Bridge reconstruction: London Road A162, Barkston Ash
We are writing to make you aware of essential work that is due to take place in your area as part of the
Transpennine Route Upgrade, which will deliver more frequent, faster, greener trains, running on a better,
cleaner and more reliable railway between York, Leeds and Manchester.
What will we be doing?
The railway bridge deck over the A162 London Road at Barkston Ash near Sherburn-in-Elmet requires
upgrading following an assessment by Network Rail specialists. Replacing the bridge will also support the
future electrification of the line.
A map showing the location of the bridge is below.
This work was originally planned to take place over Christmas 2023 but has been rescheduled.
Unfortunately, due to high winds of up to 50mph it was unsafe to operate the large crane needed to move the heavy metal bridge deck into place, and so work was postponed before the old bridge was removed.
When will we be working?
Our construction teams will be working for eight days on the following dates and times (pending approval
from North Yorkshire Council):
- 08:00 Sunday 26th May to 00:01 Monday 3rd June 2024
A full road closure will be in place between these times.
This is to enable preparation work to begin and a protective surface to be laid to prevent damage to the road surface, then for completion works to be carried out and site demobilisation to take place once the new bridge deck is in place.
The reconstruction of the railway bridge will take place between 28th and 31st May.
How may this affect you?
The closure of the A162 London Road and subsequent need for a temporary diversion near your business may cause temporary inconvenience and we apologise in advance for any disruption this may cause.
We have prepared a diversionary route with the help and support of North Yorkshire Council for all vehicles.
The proposed diversionary route will be via the A1(M). Associated signage will be in place to guide all vehicles during these periods. A map showing the diversionary route is available to view alongside this letter.
