Sherburn in Elmet has seen significant growth in recent years, but community infrastructure has not kept pace.
Despite rapid population and industrial growth over the past 15 years, Sherburn in Elmet remains the only conurbation of its size in North Yorkshire without a modern, publicly accessible indoor sports and leisure facility. The only hall in the town at Sherburn High School was constructed in 1970 and has never been meaningfully upgraded, making it the second oldest un-refurbished sports hall in North Yorkshire.
For too long, Sherburn in Elmet has been the outlier — a growing and productive community and service centre for surrounding villages without the infrastructure its population and economy clearly warrant.
