Peter Pan Nursery in Sherburn in Elmet encourages a play-based approach to learning, offering children the opportunity to have fun and build confidence with the help of its new art cupboard. Its purchase was part-funded by a grant from Kingspan Insulation’s Planet Passionate Community Fund.
The nursery is a registered charity that provides a stimulating and safe environment for children who require support due to additional needs, disabilities, illness, or behavioural issues. To be able to provide respite care for local families, it relies heavily on donations and fundraising efforts.
A £500 grant from the Community Fund was awarded to Peter Pan Nursery to help the volunteer-led team purchase a ‘mega art cupboard’ to safely store and organise the nursery’s range of art materials. Children at the nursery can use art as a fun tactile and sensory experience, but it can also be used as a method of teaching children about self-expression and emotional regulation.

Kay Smith, General Manager at Peter Pan Nursery, said:
“The cupboard has made a huge difference in our creative room. It makes everything so much more organised and accessible. And, unlike our previous drawers, this cupboard is lockable. So, not only is it safer for storing glue and paint but it stops little hands going in to help themselves to all of the craft supplies!”
Encouraging wellbeing and recreation within the community is a key objective for the Kingspan Insulation Planet Passionate Community Fund. The Fund awards grants to projects and initiatives which have been nominated by staff at its UK sites and meet one of four criteria. In addition to encouraging wellbeing and recreation, these are:
- helping communities to meet one of its Planet Passionate focus areas – reducing energy demand and helping to switch to renewable sources, lowering carbon emissions, supporting circularity and recycling, and helping to maintain clean waterways;
- supporting biodiversity, conservation, and protection of our natural world; and
- developing the education and skills of young people.
