Shining Star community recognition awards shortlist announced

In April, Selby District Council launched its Shining Star community recognition awards. The awards provide an opportunity for people in the district to say thank you and to recognise the outstanding actions of those people, businesses, and organisations who went above and beyond to support others.

The council received 64 nominations which showcased the fantastic support communities received throughout the challenges of 2020, from floods to the Coronavirus pandemic. All nominees have received a letter of thanks from the Council’s Chief Executive Janet Waggott.

In August, all nominations were presented to a panel of judges who shortlisted the nominees for each category. The judging panel included representatives from the council, Selby College, the Federation of Small Businesses and North Yorkshire County Council Stronger Communities. All nominees who haven’t been shortlisted will receive a certificate of recognition.

Lead Executive Member for Communities and Economic Development, Cllr David Buckle, said. “We wanted to recognise and thank the people, businesses, and organisations who went above and beyond to support others during the last year.

“The award finalists are a great representation of all those who have helped. I would also like to thank everybody who took the time to submit a nomination – and to wish good luck to all the finalists!

“It has been a difficult time for many people with the pandemic and the floods in the south of the district. The community spirit we have seen is heart-warming and shows why Selby District is a great place to live.”
