The 3rd annual South Milford Duck Race was held over the late May Bank holiday, on Sunday 27th at the Swan Hotel in South Milford. As always the event was filled with people watching and getting involved in the race and other activities, all of which were held to raise money for Alzheimer’s Charity and care. Chairman of the Selby District Parish Council, David Buckle officially opened the event and thus the fun began! The rubber and plastic ducks were released into the lake at the side of the pub and were eagerly watched by event attendees to see which duck would cross the finish line first!
One of the brilliant organisers Wendy Speight, shared the story:
It all started 3 years ago after a visit to Charlestown, they were having a duck race in the stream at the side of the hotel as we waited for our taxi. It attracted hundreds of people. I had the idea to bring it back to South Milford. It was first tested on the Tour De Yorkshire event when it came through Milford. It was very successful and it has grown and grown.
I am an area manager for a Funeral Company and part of my role is to assist in community events. I absolutely love the day and have managed to get a very good team together. We have gone from strength to strength and have managed to almost double the funds year on year.
All our prizes are kindly donated from friends and local businesses which means that we can give all the proceeds of the day to charity. This years chosen charity was Alzheimer’s as this is something that is close to my heart. My Mum was diagnosed last year with the illness and I have several very good friends who’s parents also have it.
The day was an absolute success and the total so far is running at £3920 with another event due to raffle the remaining prizes.
All organisers of the duck race want to say a big well done and thank you to everyone who generously gave prizes, time, effort and most of all money, it was a brilliant day and funds are going to a very worthy cause
