After the devastating fire in July which caused significant damage to the Sherburn High PE Department, staff, students and the local community were quick to offer to raise funds to help replace the lost PE equipment to ensure students at Sherburn High could continue to enjoy the wide range of sports on offer in PE lessons and extra-curricular clubs.
Fundraising efforts have been coordinated by Team Sherburn, made up of staff members: Ben Featherstone, Lydia Jackson, Andrea Liversidge and Pui Ma as well as the Friends of Sherburn High (FOSH).
As part of these efforts, Ben Featherstone organised a football match between Otley Town U16s and Sherburn White Rose U16s, many of whom are students of Sherburn High, to try and assist with the fundraising. The match was played at Otley Town on Friday 17th August with a raffle held to help raise money.
Team Sherburn were completely overwhelmed with the offers of support from local businesses in Sherburn and Otley who donated raffle prizes and the generosity of people to snap up raffle tickets for prizes which included two signed Liverpool FC shirts, a James Milner signed football, a 3 day hot tub hire, vouchers, champagne, chocolate and gift sets. Otley Town also put on a BBQ with all profits going directly to the Team Sherburn fund.
The match itself was played in front of a huge crowd, including a large contingent from Sherburn who had travelled over by coach and in a number of cars. Otley Town took the lead before half time, before a Sherburn equaliser. It was quite fitting that the winning goal for Sherburn was scored by Sherburn High GCSE PE student, Derek Fairclough.
After the match the raffle was drawn and the total calculated, Team Sherburn is delighted to announce that as a result of the raffle and BBQ, a fantastic £1000 was raised towards the PE equipment fund.
Special thanks must go to all who donated prizes, including New Balance UK, Baildon Hot Tubs, Brown’s Gallery Otley, Wilkinson’s Butchers Otley, C & G Starkey Butchers Sherburn, Jacksons Butchers Sherburn, Tesco Sherburn, and Lotherton Hall. Thanks also to Paul Rogers from Paul2Paul Photography for donating his time to capture the evening and everyone involved with Otley Town and Sherburn White Rose.
